Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (unbleached)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 3 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar, sprinkle the yeast on top, and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, and oil. Stir until combined.
  3. Knead: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Braid: Punch down risen dough, divide into three equal pieces, roll each piece into strands, and braid them together.
  6. Second Rise & Bake: Place braided loaf on parchment-lined baking sheet, cover for half-hour rise while preheating oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush with egg wash before baking for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
