Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling
  • 1 lb ground beef Use 80/20 for a good balance of flavor and moisture.
  • 1 medium onion Finely diced.
  • 1 medium green bell pepper Finely diced.
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced.
  • 1 cup ketchup For sweetness and tang.
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Adds depth of flavor.
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar For sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp mustard Yellow or Dijon, for tang.
  • 1 tsp salt Adjust to taste.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Freshly ground.
  • 1/2 cup water To adjust sauce consistency.
For Serving
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Soft and fresh.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Optional, for topping.

Method

Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. This step is important to develop flavor.
  2. Drain excess fat from the skillet, leaving about 1 tablespoon for flavor.
  3. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened. This adds sweetness and texture to the filling.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, and water to the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or pepper as desired.
Assemble the Sloppy Joes
  1. While the filling is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or on a skillet until golden brown.
  2. Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto the bottom half of each bun.
  3. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the filling.
  4. Place the top half of the bun on each sandwich and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious Sloppy Joe!
