Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. This step is important to develop flavor.
- Drain excess fat from the skillet, leaving about 1 tablespoon for flavor.
- Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened. This adds sweetness and texture to the filling.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, and water to the skillet. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or pepper as desired.
Assemble the Sloppy Joes
- While the filling is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or on a skillet until golden brown.
- Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe filling onto the bottom half of each bun.
- If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the filling.
- Place the top half of the bun on each sandwich and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious Sloppy Joe!
