Ingredients

For the Beef Mixture
  • 1 lb ground beef preferably lean
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for sautéing
  • 1 tsp salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper to taste
For the Beans
  • 2 cans canned navy beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup ketchup for sweetness and tang
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce adds depth of flavor
  • 1 tbsp mustard yellow or Dijon
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika for a smoky flavor
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin for warmth
For Topping
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional, for serving

Method

Prepare the Beef Mixture
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. This step builds the base flavor of the dish.
  2. Add the minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Stir occasionally to break up the meat and ensure even cooking.
  3. Season the mixture with salt and black pepper. Stir well to combine and remove from heat.
Combine Beans and Seasonings
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the drained navy beans, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, and ground cumin. Mix thoroughly until the beans are well coated with the sauce.
Assemble and Bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a baking dish, combine the beef mixture with the bean mixture. Stir gently to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together.
  4. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and slightly caramelized on top.
  5. If using, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top during the last 5 minutes of baking, allowing it to melt.
Serve
  1. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. This dish pairs well with cornbread or a fresh salad.
